Greyton Animal Welfare

The Greyton Animal Welfare Society seeks to provide health care for the animals of the indigent. The Society offers an emergency service which is operative 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The sterilization of dogs and cats has been our priority for many years. Education and home inspections are another two important facets of our work. Our areas of operation include, Genadendal, Voorstekraal, Bereaville, Heuwelkroon and Bosmanskloof as well as the surrounding farms.  Greyton Animal Welfare Society runs a weekly clinic, offering services to those who cannot afford private care for their pets. In addition to this, the society has two field workers who are out the field providing a 24 hour service, 365 days a year, rescuing and caring for animals in need. They also investigate cases of animal cruelty, abuse and neglect, and proactively inspect the condition of domestic animals, ensuring that there is adequate shelter, food and fresh water.

Greyton Animal Welfare Society primary focus is on the prevention of the overpopulation of dogs and cats. This is done through educating owners on their responsibilities of the need to have pets sterilized. Mass sterilisation days are held as frequently as needed in the disadvantaged communities. On these days, veterinarians provide their services free of charge, and assisted by the Greyton AWS staff and a large group of volunteers, they sterilise as many as 50 dogs and cats in a single day.

Greyton Animal Welfare Society has built an excellent kennel facilities called Fido and Friends. Here we board dogs and cats providing excellent home away from home care. The kennel also has a separate section (Saville Row) where we rehabilitate abused, abandoned and neglected dogs.

Income from our little shop, Lady and the Tramp Charity Shop, forms the backbone of our finances. Staffed entirely by volunteers this little shop sells anything including furniture, clothes, household appliances, ornaments, paintings, etc, etc. Any donations are gratefully received and we will collect (even in Cape Town, if the quantity of items warrants the petrol). Situated in the central Main Road the shop is in an ideal location to attract passers-by. Every cent raised directly benefits the animals in our care. Good quality dog, cat and puppy food is also sold at cost from the shop. Every month we sell over R 4 000 worth of food.
